NMC (National Medical Commission) Bill got a clear nod from Rajya Sabha!
On Thursday, August 1, 2019, Rajya Sabha gave a clear nod to the most-awaited and contentious NCM (National Medical Commission) Bill.
The Bill was passed with 2 amendments introduced by the members of Upper House, which means that the bill will be referred to lower house once again before going to the President of India for his approval.
The main objective of the bill is replacing the Medical Council of India (MCI), the regulating authority of medical education in the country, with the National Medical Commission (NMC). Medical Council of India was dissolved in the year 2010 because of the corruption charges against its president Ketan Desai by the Central Bureau of Investigation.
National Medical Commission will be responsible for approving and assessing medical colleges, capping MBBS Fees, conducting common MBBS Entrance and exit exams.
As informed by the health and welfare minister Harsh Vardhan, the bill will improve the quality of medical professionals.
